Got a touch of the diabeetus in your medical history and looking to get life insurance?
Make sure you know the following about your diabetes history so the most accurate life insurance quotes are provided:
- What year were you diagnosed with diabetes? – If you are not sure, that is okay, just give an estimate of the number of years you’ve been diabetic.
- Are you a Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic?
- What prescriptions are you taking?
- What is your most recent A1C reading?
- Have you ever had any diabetes complications from the condition such as neuropathy, retinopathy, nephropathy, amputation, or diabetic coma?
If you don’t know the answers to some of these, your doctor should have this information in your records and should be easily obtained (often can be relayed to you over the phone or available as a downloadable online report for some offices). An important note to remember, the A1C is different than your daily blood glucose level (which has a normal range of a number between 80-130 mg/dL). This number measures your average blood sugar levels over the last 90-120 days and is generally going to be somewhere between 4 – 12. Your A1C is a good indicator as to how well-controlled your diabetes is. For example, someone that has an A1C of 6, has had diabetes for 5 years and takes their medication daily is going to get a better risk classification than someone that was diagnosed with diabetes 6 months ago with an A1C of 9 and is not on medication or takes them sporadically.
The answers to these questions (along with other medical history factors) have a major impact on the risk classification you may qualify for with each insurance company (the risk classification determines the rates for an insurance policy) – for more information on how risk classifications work and affect the rates you’re looking at for a policy with an insurer, click here -> RISK CLASSES
