Before you can get a Medicare supplement plan, you must have applied for Medicare Part A and Part B want to have confirmation of an effective date (this minimizes the risk of delays in setting up your coverage). You can apply for Medicare Parts A & B through the social security administraiton website, ssa.gov, or go to your local social security administration office (your local office can be found on the ssa.gov website as well). The effective date for your Medicare supplement plan can be as early as the effective date of your Part B coverage.

You can apply for a Medigap plan up to 3 months in advance of the plan’s effective date!
