Monday, March 31, 2014, had been designated as the open enrollment deadline for individuals to enroll in a health insurance plan under the new Affordable Care Act or pay a penalty for not having coverage. Due to a late surge in individuals applying for health insurance as we approach the deadline, the Obama administration announced they will allow more time for those trying to apply for coverage in the federal marketplace, but are experiencing difficutlies completing the process.

Administration officials indicated that individuals will need to attest to their enrollment problems as part of the application process, but have yet to indicate how much extra time they will get a policy in force. It was reported by a news source that mid-april will be the expected final deadline for getting coverage in force, but this has yet to be confirmed. Additional details should be released shortly – make sure to check back for updates!
