Annuity rates near 6% are available right now, but only on one kind of annuity: the multi-year guaranteed annuity (MYGA), a fixed annuity that locks a rate for a set number of years. As of October 26, 2026, Athene’s published rate was 6.05% on a 5-year term and 6.15% on a 7-year term for deposits of $100,000 or more, Oceanview’s 6-year and 10-year rates were 6.10% and 6.20%, and Protective’s 5-year rate was 6.00% at $75,000 or more. North American, Midland National, and Reliance Standard were between 5.80% and 5.90% on 5- and 7-year terms. Those rates come with surrender charges, a market value adjustment on most products, and state availability limits, so a headline rate is only the starting point.

Fixed Annuity (MYGA) Rates as of October 26, 2026
The table shows published MYGA rates for six carriers we work with, as of October 26, 2026. Rates are annual percentage yields (APY). Where a carrier pays more for larger deposits, the first rate is the top tier and the second is the next tier down, as shown in the last column.

Rates are published APYs as of October 26, 2026. Oceanview rates shown are for all states except California, which has lower rates. Rates change on a daily basis, vary by state and deposit size, and are not guaranteed until your contract is issued. Not an offer of insurance. Individual outcomes vary.
Which carriers are at or near 6%? Athene (5- and 7-year), Oceanview (6- and 10-year), and Protective (5-year) are at or above 6% in their top tiers. Protective’s 7-year and Reliance Standard’s 7- and 10-year rates (5.90%) are within a tenth of a point. North American (5.85%) and Midland National (5.80%) are close on 5-year terms. Oceanview’s 5-year rate (5.50%) is lower than its 6-year rate, so term length matters.
Which products are these rates for? Athene Max Rate 3, 5, and 7; Oceanview Harbourview MYGA 3, 5, 6, 7, and 10; Protective Secure Saver 5 and 7; Reliance Standard Reliance Guarantee 3, 5, 7, and 10; North American Guarantee Plus 3, 5, and 7; and Midland National MNL Guarantee Pro 3, 5, and 7. Reliance Standard also sells Eleos MYGAs (5.85% with an MVA and 5.70% without, 5-year), which are not shown. Confirm the exact product, rate, and your state’s availability with a licensed agent before applying.
Rate Disclosure
As-of-date disclosure: All rates in this article are as of October 26, 2026 and are taken from published rate data, not from a carrier contract. Annuity rates change on a daily basis, and the rate you receive depends on the carrier’s rules at the time your application is processed. Rates also vary by state, deposit size, and whether the money is qualified (IRA) or non-qualified. After purchase, a MYGA’s rate is guaranteed only for the stated term; renewal rates are set by the carrier. Ratings and surrender terms should be confirmed against the carrier’s current materials and your issued contract. Nothing here is tax, legal, or investment advice.
What “6%” Does and Doesn’t Mean
- It is a fixed annuity rate, not a market-wide rate. The 6% figure applies to MYGAs at the top of the market for certain terms. It is not what every annuity pays, and it does not describe savings accounts, bonds, or variable or indexed annuities.
- The top tier needs a larger deposit. Athene’s 6.05% 5-year rate requires $100,000 or more (5.80% at its $10,000 minimum). Protective’s 6.00% requires $75,000 or more and was 4.75% at its $10,000 minimum. Oceanview’s 6.10% 6-year rate requires $70,000 or more (5.75% at $20,000).
- State availability limits the headline. Athene’s Max Rate 5 is listed in about 31 states, not including California, New York, Texas, and Washington. Protective’s and North American’s MYGAs are listed in 49 states plus D.C., Reliance Standard’s in 49 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico, and Midland National’s in 49 states plus D.C. None of those are available in New York, and Oceanview’s rates are lower in California. Availability changes, so confirm for your state.
- APY assumes the interest compounds. Some fixed annuities pay simple interest instead, which can produce a lower balance than a same-percentage compounded rate. The illustration below assumes annual compounding at the published APY.
- Higher numbers sometimes appear elsewhere, with trade-offs. Higher figures from other companies can turn up online. In our experience those often come from carriers with lower financial-strength ratings, which is why we limit our recommendations to carriers rated A- or better by A.M. Best.

| Product | Term | Published APY (top tier) | Value at end of term | Interest earned |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Athene Max Rate 5 | 5 years | 6.05% | $134,138 | $34,138 |
| Protective Secure Saver 5 | 5 years | 6.00% | $133,823 | $33,823 |
| North American Guarantee Plus 5 / Reliance Guarantee 5 | 5 years | 5.85% | $132,878 | $32,878 |
| Midland National MNL Guarantee Pro 5 | 5 years | 5.80% | $132,565 | $32,565 |
| Oceanview Harbourview MYGA 5 | 5 years | 5.50% | $130,696 | $30,696 |
| Oceanview Harbourview MYGA 6 | 6 years | 6.10% | $142,657 | $42,657 |
| Athene Max Rate 7 | 7 years | 6.15% | $151,859 | $51,859 |
| Protective Secure Saver 7 / Reliance Guarantee 7 | 7 years | 5.90% | $149,373 | $49,373 |
| North American Guarantee Plus 7 / Midland MNL Guarantee Pro 7 / Oceanview Harbourview MYGA 7 | 7 years | 5.65% | $146,922 | $46,922 |
| Oceanview Harbourview MYGA 10 | 10 years | 6.20% | $182,493 | $82,493 |
| Reliance Guarantee 10 | 10 years | 5.90% | $177,402 | $77,402 |
Illustration assumes a $100,000 deposit (which qualifies for each top tier shown), the October 26, 2026 published APY compounding annually, no withdrawals, and the contract held to the end of its term. Taxes, surrender charges, and any market value adjustment are not reflected. Illustrative only; not a guarantee of future rates.
Key takeaway: Within the 5-year products, Athene’s 6.05% would end about $1,260 ahead of North American’s or Reliance Standard’s 5.85% and about $3,442 ahead of Oceanview’s 5.50% on the same $100,000. On seven years, Athene’s 6.15% would end about $2,486 ahead of the 5.90% rate at Protective and Reliance Standard. On ten years, Oceanview’s 6.20% would end about $5,090 ahead of Reliance Standard’s 5.90%. Longer terms lock the money up longer, and a small rate gap matters less than the contract terms and your state’s availability, which is why the next section matters.
Surrender Charges and Liquidity
A MYGA trades flexibility for a locked rate. Taking out more than the contract’s free amount during the surrender period triggers a charge, and some contracts also apply a market value adjustment (MVA), which can raise or lower the surrender value depending on interest-rate movement since issue. That said, many contracts allow you to access up to 10% of your principal each year without a surrender charge, although the free amount varies by product. Based on published product data, the 5-year products compare like this:
Swipe sideways to see the full table.
| 5-Year Product | Surrender charge, years 1 to 5 | MVA | Free withdrawals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Athene Max Rate 5 | 10% each year, then 0% | Yes | Interest only (confirm; some materials list up to 10% a year) |
| Protective Secure Saver 5 | 9%, 8%, 7%, 6%, 5%, then 0% | Yes | 10% a year |
| Reliance Standard Reliance Guarantee 5 | 8%, 8%, 7%, 6%, 5%, then 0% | Yes | 10% a year |
| North American Guarantee Plus 5 | 9%, 8%, 7%, 6%, 5%, then 0% | Not stated | None in year 1; interest only after |
| Midland National MNL Guarantee Pro 5 | 8%, 8%, 7%, 6%, 5%, then 0% | Yes | None in year 1; interest only after |
| Oceanview Harbourview MYGA 5 | Not obtained; confirm with Oceanview | Yes | 10% of contract value from the first anniversary |
Surrender schedules and free-withdrawal terms are from published product data, and final terms should be verified against the issued contract. Seven-year, ten-year, and Oceanview 6-year products have different schedules; we have not listed them here. Confirm before you apply.
As an example, a full surrender in the first year of a $100,000 five-year contract would carry a charge of roughly $10,000 on Athene’s schedule, $9,000 on Protective’s or North American’s, and $8,000 on Reliance Standard’s or Midland National’s, before any MVA. That is why we ask clients how much of the money they could need access to before the term ends. See our explainer on annuity fees and surrender charges.
Safety, Ratings, and Guaranty Limits
- Financial strength. A MYGA’s guarantee is only as strong as the insurer behind it. We limit our annuity recommendations to carriers rated A- or better by A.M. Best, and all six carriers above meet that standard. Ratings can change, so check the current rating at A.M. Best. Our page on annuity companies we use explains how we screen carriers.
- Not FDIC insured. Fixed annuities are insurance contracts. Unlike bank deposits, they are not FDIC insured. If an insurer fails, state life and health guaranty associations provide a backstop up to state-set limits, which commonly are around $250,000 of annuity cash value per insurer but vary by state. See NOLHGA’s overview of how policyholders are protected and our page on whether annuities are safe.
- Free-look period. Most states give you a short window after delivery to cancel a new annuity. The length varies by state and product.
Tax Considerations
Interest in a non-qualified fixed annuity grows tax-deferred and is generally taxed as ordinary income when withdrawn. Withdrawals before age 59½ may also be subject to a 10% additional federal tax, with exceptions. Money moved from an IRA or 401(k) follows different rules, and a 1035 exchange from an existing life insurance or annuity contract has its own requirements. Ask your tax professional how a purchase fits your situation, and see how annuities are taxed and IRA and 401(k) rollovers into annuities.
Placement Patterns We See
- A saver with a maturing CD who wants a guaranteed rate for several years. A MYGA is often compared with a CD here. The trade-offs are surrender charges, no FDIC coverage, and tax treatment. See Annuity vs. CD.
- A family that received a life insurance payout and does not want to take market risk with it right away. A fixed annuity is one option people consider. We cover that in What to Do With a Life Insurance Payout.
- A pre-retiree moving part of an IRA toward guaranteed interest. A qualified-money MYGA changes the tax picture and may affect required distributions, so these are worth working through with a tax professional.
- A buyer in a state where the highest-rate product is not offered. The practical comparison is often among the carriers that are available there, which is where having several options helps.
- A buyer who may need the money within a year or two. A surrender-charge contract is often the wrong fit for the money they could need soon. Keeping that portion liquid usually comes first.
These are illustrative, anonymized patterns, not descriptions of specific clients or guarantees of outcome. Individual outcomes vary.
The Bottom Line
A MYGA near 6% may fit if:
- You can leave the money untouched for the full 3- to 10-year term
- You want a rate that is guaranteed for the term rather than one that moves with markets
- You are comfortable with an insurer-backed guarantee instead of FDIC coverage
- You live in a state where the higher-rate product is available and your deposit reaches the top tier
Look at other options if:
- You may need access to most of the money before the term ends
- You want growth tied to a market index (see fixed indexed annuities) or lifetime income (see income riders)
- Your deposit is below the tier that earns the top rate
Because rates change on a daily basis, the right move is to compare current rates and contract terms on the day you are ready to buy. Frequently Asked Questions
Are annuity rates really at 6%?
For some fixed annuities, yes. As of October 26, 2026, published MYGA rates were 6.05% for 5 years and 6.15% for 7 years at Athene on deposits of $100,000 or more, 6.10% for 6 years and 6.20% for 10 years at Oceanview, and 6.00% for 5 years at Protective on deposits of $75,000 or more. That figure applies to multi-year guaranteed annuities at the top of the market, not to all annuities or to savings products in general, and it varies by state and deposit size.
Which carriers you work with are at or near 6%?
As of October 26, 2026, Athene (5- and 7-year), Oceanview (6- and 10-year), and Protective (5-year) were at or above 6% in their top tiers. Protective’s 7-year and Reliance Standard’s 7- and 10-year rates were 5.90%, North American’s 5-year was 5.85%, and Midland National’s 5-year was 5.80%. Rates change on a daily basis, so confirm current figures before applying.
Is a MYGA safe, and is it FDIC insured?
A MYGA is an insurance contract backed by the issuing insurer’s claims-paying ability. It is not FDIC insured. State life and health guaranty associations provide a backstop up to state-set limits if an insurer fails, which vary by state. We limit our annuity recommendations to carriers rated A- or better by A.M. Best.
What happens if I need my money early?
Many contracts allow you to access up to 10% of your principal (contract value) each year without a surrender charge, though the free amount varies by product. Some contracts limit free withdrawals to interest only, and some allow none in the first year. Withdrawals above the free amount during the surrender period trigger a surrender charge, and some contracts add a market value adjustment. On the 5-year products where we obtained the schedule, first-year charges ranged from 8% to 10% of the amount withdrawn. Confirm the free-withdrawal terms and the schedule in your contract.
Are annuity earnings taxable?
Interest in a non-qualified fixed annuity grows tax-deferred and is generally taxed as ordinary income when withdrawn. Withdrawals before age 59½ may also be subject to a 10% additional federal tax, with exceptions. Ask a tax professional about your situation.
Why do some annuity rates appear higher than 6%?
Higher rates from other companies sometimes appear online. In our experience those often come from carriers with lower financial-strength ratings or different terms, which is why we limit our recommendations to carriers rated A- or better by A.M. Best. Compare the rating, surrender schedule, and state availability, not just the rate.
