A North American vs. Symetra term insurance comparison is a trade between price and policy features. In our October 2026 Compulife check, Symetra was cheaper than North American in all five profiles we ran, by $7.73 to $37.44 a month on $500,000 of 20-year term. North American’s ADDvantage Term includes accelerated death benefit endorsements for critical, chronic, and terminal illness (where available, with fees and a discount when used), and its conversion window runs 12, 15, or 20 years on the 15-, 20-, and 30-year terms (capped at age 70), compared with the 10th policy anniversary for Symetra’s SwiftTerm unless you add its Conversion Enhancement Rider. SwiftTerm includes a terminal illness benefit only, and it offers an online path with coverage in as little as 18 minutes for qualifying applicants.

Key takeaway: Symetra’s quote was about 21% to 30% lower than North American’s across these five profiles. Over a 20-year term (240 months), the gap adds up to roughly $1,855 for the 30-year-old male, $2,006 for the 40-year-old female, $3,137 and $5,491 for the 45-year-old male at Preferred Plus and Standard, and $8,986 for the 55-year-old male. Compulife shows prices, not the reasons behind them, so we cannot say how much of the gap reflects the feature differences below.

North American Company: Overview

North American Company for Life and Health (A.M. Best A+ per Compulife) was founded in 1886 and is part of Sammons Financial Group. Its ADDvantage Term is offered with level premiums for 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. After the level period, North American says premiums increase annually but will never exceed the guaranteed Annual Renewal Premium.

Included Living Benefits

ADDvantage Term includes accelerated death benefit endorsements that let the owner access part of the death benefit if the insured becomes critically, chronically, or terminally ill, subject to eligibility. There is no additional premium at issue on eligible policies, but an administration fee applies when the benefit is elected, the face amount is reduced by the amount accelerated, and a discount applies so the payout is less than the amount accelerated. North American states the critical and chronic illness benefits are not available in California. Benefit caps and eligibility rules have changed over time, so confirm current terms before relying on them.

Conversion

Per North American’s current ADDvantage Term marketing guide (form 608NM-2, dated April 2026), the policy is fully convertible to permanent universal life coverage without going through underwriting. The guide says conversion is allowed “during select durations during the term period, or to age 70, whichever is earlier,” and that the conversion period is never less than five years. The durations are:

  • 10-year term: the earlier of age 70 or 7 years
  • 15-year term: the earlier of age 70 or 12 years
  • 20-year term: the earlier of age 70 or 15 years
  • 30-year term: the earlier of age 70 or 20 years

So the window does not run for the full level period on every term. On a 30-year policy it ends at year 20 at the latest, which matches what Compulife shows. Some older summaries online still describe a window through the level period or age 74 or 75 (69 for the 30-year term), including North American’s own 2019 launch release. We rely on the April 2026 guide, but confirm the rule for your policy in the contract before you plan around it.

Underwriting and Riders

  • WriteAway Accelerated Underwriting: North American describes it as a faster, less invasive issue process. Eligibility rules apply, and we have not verified the current eligibility or turnaround time.
  • Waiver of Premium (optional): waives the premium if the insured is certified totally disabled. Extra monthly cost, ends at age 65, limited to a maximum Table 4 rating, and not available in California.
  • Children’s Insurance rider (optional): covers a child’s life for an additional premium, with the option for the child to convert to a permanent policy later.

Symetra Life Insurance: Overview

Symetra is owned by Japan’s Sumitomo Life (A.M. Best A per Compulife). Its SwiftTerm product is available in 10-, 15-, 20-, and 30-year terms with level premiums. Symetra also sells Symetra Term Life, a fully underwritten product. After the level term, Symetra’s materials say the policy renews with annually increasing premiums until age 95.

SwiftTerm’s Three Underwriting Paths

Symetra says your application answers determine one of three paths: instant coverage (qualifying applicants may be approved in as little as 18 minutes), accelerated underwriting (about 24 to 72 hours), or full underwriting (up to about 30 days, which may include an exam). Not everyone qualifies for the faster paths.

Conversion, the CER, and Waiver of Premium

The base conversion privilege is included: you can request conversion to a permanent Symetra policy (currently universal life) before the end of the 10th policy anniversary or the policy anniversary after your 70th birthday, whichever is earlier. Partial conversions are allowed, but the remaining term coverage ends, and conversion is not available once an accelerated death benefit has been paid. Symetra’s optional Conversion Enhancement Rider (CER) allows conversion to additional Symetra permanent products and may extend the conversion period, but it cannot be combined with the Waiver of Premium Rider. Confirm the exact deadline for your term before relying on the extension.

Other Symetra Features

  • Terminal illness benefit included: up to 75% of the death benefit, capped at $500,000, when a physician certifies less than 12 months to live (not available on rated policies).
  • Bereavement services: a Value Added Benefit gives beneficiaries access to grief and estate-settlement support through Empathy, a third party. These services are not insurance.
  • Accidental Death Benefit rider (optional): up to $250,000.

Riders: What’s Included vs. What Costs Extra

North American: ADDvantage Term

✅ Included (where available): accelerated death benefit endorsement for critical, chronic, and terminal illness (administration fee and discount apply when used); conversion privilege

➕ Additional cost: Waiver of Premium (not in California); Children’s Insurance rider

⚠️ Not listed in the consumer guide we reviewed (confirm with North American): accidental death and guaranteed insurability riders

Symetra: SwiftTerm

✅ Included: terminal illness Accelerated Death Benefit (75% up to $500,000); bereavement services (Value Added Benefit); base conversion privilege

➕ Additional cost: Conversion Enhancement Rider (not with Waiver of Premium); Accidental Death Benefit; Children’s Term Life ($1,000 to $10,000 per child); Waiver of Premium

⚠️ Chronic and critical illness benefits are not on the SwiftTerm rider list we reviewed; confirm with Symetra

Using an accelerated benefit reduces the death benefit, so the cost of these benefits shows up when you use them rather than in the premium.

Placement Patterns We See

  • A budget-focused buyer who wants the most coverage per dollar. With Symetra roughly 21% to 30% lower in our October 2026 check, price-sensitive buyers often start there, particularly if they plan to hold the policy for the full term and do not expect to convert.
  • A buyer in their 40s with a 20- or 30-year term who may want to convert later. North American’s window runs 15 years on a 20-year term and 20 years on a 30-year term (capped at age 70), while Symetra’s base window ends at the 10th anniversary. That gap can matter more than a few dollars a month.
  • A buyer who wants living benefits beyond terminal illness. North American’s included critical and chronic illness endorsements are the feature to price, keeping in mind the administration fee, discount, reduced death benefit, and the California exclusion.
  • A buyer who needs coverage in place quickly and is comfortable applying online. Symetra’s SwiftTerm instant and accelerated paths are built for this, for applicants who qualify.

These are illustrative, anonymized patterns, not descriptions of specific clients or guarantees of outcome. Individual outcomes vary.

The Verdict

Choose Symetra if:

  • Lower premium is the priority and you expect to keep the policy as term
  • You want the option of instant or accelerated underwriting through SwiftTerm
  • You want an Accidental Death Benefit rider or the bereavement-services benefit
  • You are buying a 10-year term, where Symetra’s base conversion window (10 years) is longer than North American’s (7 years)

Choose North American if:

  • You want critical and chronic illness accelerated benefits included on the term policy, and accept the fees and discount when used
  • You expect to convert and are buying a 15-, 20-, or 30-year term, where North American’s window (12, 15, or 20 years) is longer than Symetra’s base 10 years
  • You are comfortable paying the higher premium shown above for those features

Neither choice is right for everyone. The decision depends on your budget, how likely you are to convert, and whether illness benefits matter to you. Frequently Asked Questions

Is North American or Symetra cheaper for term insurance?

Symetra, in our October 2026 Compulife check for $500,000 of 20-year term. It was lower in all five profiles, from $18.23 vs. $25.96 a month for a 30-year-old male in Preferred Plus to $112.16 vs. $149.60 for a 55-year-old male. Rates change and depend on underwriting, so quote your own profile.

How do North American and Symetra differ on conversion?

North American’s ADDvantage Term allows conversion to permanent universal life without underwriting for the earlier of age 70 or 7 years (10-year term), 12 years (15-year), 15 years (20-year), or 20 years (30-year), per its April 2026 marketing guide. Symetra’s base conversion must be requested before the end of the 10th policy anniversary or the anniversary after age 70, whichever is earlier; its optional Conversion Enhancement Rider can add products and may extend the period. Confirm the rule for your policy in the contract.

Does North American’s term policy include critical and chronic illness benefits?

ADDvantage Term includes accelerated death benefit endorsements for critical, chronic, and terminal illness, subject to eligibility, with no additional premium at issue on eligible policies. An administration fee applies when elected, the death benefit is reduced, and a discount applies to the payout. North American states the critical and chronic illness benefits are not available in California.

What does Symetra’s terminal illness benefit pay?

Up to 75% of the death benefit, capped at $500,000, as a lump sum if a licensed physician certifies a terminal illness with less than 12 months to live. It is not available on rated policies. It reduces the death benefit, and conversion is not available after it has been paid.

Can I add Waiver of Premium to either policy?

Yes, as an optional rider with extra cost on both. North American’s ends at age 65 and is not available in California. Symetra’s SwiftTerm version cannot be combined with the Conversion Enhancement Rider.
