A Protective Life vs. Transamerica term insurance comparison comes down to product details, not price. In our October 30, 2026 Compulife check on $500,000 of 20-year term, Protective Life and Transamerica’s Trendsetter Super were within $0.07 to $0.13 a month on four of five profiles, and Protective was $1.11 a month lower for a 55-year-old male. Protective offers terms up to 40 years and a conversion window of up to 18 years on 20- to 40-year terms. Transamerica’s Trendsetter offers terms up to 30 years, and its conversion option can run through the end of the level period with no underwriting when the new permanent policy has the same or lower face amount. Where the quotes are this close, those details are what separate the two.

At a Glance

  • Price: Effectively tied on four of five sample profiles (within $0.13 a month). Protective was $1.11 a month lower for a 55-year-old male.
  • Term lengths: Protective offers 10 to 40 years. Trendsetter offers 10 to 30 years.
  • Conversion: Protective’s Legacy UL window runs up to 18 years on 20- to 40-year terms. Transamerica’s runs to the earlier of the end of the level period or age 70 (75 for Preferred Plus).
  • Minimum face amount: Protective $100,000. Trendsetter Super starts at $25,000 for standard classes and $100,000 for Preferred and Standard Plus.

Rates sourced from Compulife® on October 30, 2026 (NV, non-tobacco). A.M. Best financial strength ratings as shown by Compulife on that date: Protective A+, Transamerica A. Rates shown are sample illustrations; actual premiums depend on full underwriting, your medical and lifestyle history, and carrier guidelines at the time of application. Not an offer of insurance.

Key takeaway: Protective was lower in all five profiles, but we treat prices within about $0.50 a month as tied, which covers four of the five. Over a 20-year term (240 months), the gap adds up to roughly $17 to $31 for those four profiles and about $266 for the 55-year-old male, a difference of about 1%. Other carriers we checked, including Banner Life and Pacific Life, also came in within pennies on these profiles, so a quote alone does not separate them.

Which products are these quotes for? The Protective figures are for Classic Choice Term. The Transamerica figures are for Trendsetter Super, Transamerica’s level-term product. Confirm the exact product when you request a quote.

Protective Life: Overview

Protective Life Insurance Company is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. Its Classic Choice Term is offered in 10-, 15-, 20-, 25-, 30-, 35-, and 40-year level terms, and coverage can be renewed to age 95. The minimum face amount is $100,000, and issue ages for the 20-year term run from 18 to 70 for non-tobacco applicants (18 to 62 for tobacco). Other terms have different age limits; for example, the 30-year term runs from 18 to 58 for non-tobacco applicants. Policies are subject to underwriting. We have not verified a specific accelerated underwriting path or turnaround time, so ask us what is currently available.

Conversion

Protective’s guide lists several conversion paths. In policy years 1 to 5, the term can convert to Protective Lifetime Assurance UL or Strategic Objectives II VUL. In all eligible years, it can convert to ProClassic Legacy UL, Dynamic Plus UL, ProClassic II UL, or non-participating whole life. The Legacy UL conversion window is up to 8 years on a 10-year term, 13 years on a 15-year term, and 18 years on 20- to 40-year terms, ending at the policy anniversary nearest the insured’s 70th birthday. Product availability can change by the time you convert, and the guide does not say whether base conversions require evidence of insurability, so confirm that before relying on it.

Optional Riders

  • Conversion Choice with ExtendCare (elected at issue): available at issue for ages 20 to 60 and face amounts of $100,000 to $5,000,000. Protective’s guide describes it as allowing conversion without evidence of insurability, over the level period minus two years (up to 18 years, or the anniversary nearest age 70). Not available for tobacco classes.
  • Waiver of Premium: available at issue for ages 18 to 55, with a six-month waiting period if the insured is totally disabled. It expires at age 65 and carries an extra cost.
  • Accidental Death Benefit: available at issue for ages 18 to 60, from $1,000 to $250,000. It expires at age 65.
  • Children’s Term Life rider: covers children from 15 days to 18 years old, with underwriting required for each child. Coverage expires when the base insured reaches 75, and children can convert at age 25 for up to five times the rider amount.
  • Income Provider endorsement: lets the death benefit be paid as guaranteed monthly or annual income for up to 30 years, at no additional cost, if elected at issue.

Transamerica: Overview

Transamerica Life Insurance Company sells the Trendsetter series of level-term products in 10-, 15-, 20-, 25-, and 30-year terms, guaranteed renewable to age 105 per Transamerica’s December 2025 producer guide. The rates in this article are for Trendsetter Super. Standard classes start at a $25,000 minimum face amount, while Preferred and Standard Plus start at $100,000. For the 20-year term at $100,000 and above, issue ages are 18 to 70 for non-tobacco applicants and 18 to 65 for tobacco.

Conversion

Per the December 2025 guide, Trendsetter’s conversion option must be exercised no later than the earlier of the end of the level premium period or the insured’s 70th birthday (75th for Preferred Plus). No underwriting is required if the exchange is to a permanent policy with the same or lower face amount, and the new policy keeps the in-force risk class if it is available. During an early conversion period (5 years on a 10-year term, 10 years on 15- and 20-year terms, and 15 years on 25- and 30-year terms), the guide lists Transamerica Financial Foundation IUL II, Transamerica Financial Choice IUL II, and Transamerica Lifetime. Later, conversion is to any permanent product Transamerica offers at the time of the exchange.

Optional Riders

  • Waiver of Premium (at issue): available for ages 18 to 55, with a six-month waiting period.
  • Accidental Death Benefit (at issue): available for ages 18 to 55, with total Transamerica accidental death coverage capped at $300,000.
  • Income Protection Option (at issue): lets the death benefit be paid as a lump sum plus monthly payments over 5 to 25 years.

Placement Patterns We See

  • A buyer comparing the lowest quotes. When Protective and Transamerica land within pennies, as they did here for four of five profiles, price rarely decides it. The tie-breakers are the conversion plan, the term lengths and face amounts available, and how each carrier’s underwriting treats the applicant’s health history.
  • A buyer who wants a 35- or 40-year term. Trendsetter stops at 30 years, so Protective is the one of the two that offers those lengths. Issue ages are lower on the longest terms, so confirm eligibility.
  • A buyer in their 40s with a 20- or 30-year term who may want permanent coverage later. Protective’s window runs up to 18 years on a 20-year term, and Transamerica’s option can run through the end of the level period, subject to the age 70 cap. The products you can convert into matter as much as the deadline.
  • A buyer who plans to keep the term policy to the end. Conversion features may never be used, and the choice often comes down to the underwriting result and the rate class each carrier offers.

These are illustrative, anonymized patterns, not descriptions of specific clients or guarantees of outcome. Individual outcomes vary.

The Verdict

Choose Protective if:

  • You want a long Legacy UL conversion window (up to 18 years on a 20- to 40-year term)
  • You need a 35- or 40-year term, which Trendsetter does not offer
  • You want the slightly lower quote shown above

Choose Transamerica if:

  • You want a conversion option that can run through the end of the level period, with no underwriting when converting to a permanent policy of the same or lower face amount
  • You want a smaller policy: Trendsetter Super starts at $25,000 for standard classes, versus Protective’s $100,000 minimum
  • You want guaranteed renewability to age 105 after the level term

Neither choice is right for everyone. The decision depends on your health history, the term length you need, and how likely you are to convert.
