A Protective Life vs. Symetra term insurance comparison comes down to product details, not price. In our November 6, 2026 Compulife check on $500,000 of 20-year term, Protective Life and Symetra were within $0.03 to $0.08 a month on four of five profiles, and Protective was $1.07 a month lower for a 55-year-old male. Protective offers terms up to 40 years and a Legacy UL conversion window of up to 18 years on 20- to 40-year terms, while Symetra’s SwiftTerm base conversion window ends at the 10th policy anniversary. SwiftTerm, in turn, offers an online path with coverage in about 18 minutes for qualifying applicants. Where the quotes are this close, those details are what separate the two.

At a Glance

  • Price: Effectively tied on four of five sample profiles (within $0.08 a month). Protective was $1.07 a month lower for a 55-year-old male.
  • Term lengths: Protective offers 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years. SwiftTerm offers 10, 15, 20, and 30 years.
  • Conversion: Protective’s Legacy UL window runs up to 18 years on 20- to 40-year terms. SwiftTerm’s base window ends at the 10th policy anniversary or the anniversary after age 70, whichever is earlier.
  • Speed: Symetra describes three SwiftTerm paths: instant coverage in about 18 minutes, accelerated underwriting in 24 to 72 hours, and full underwriting in about 30 days. Not everyone qualifies for the faster paths.

Rate Comparison: Is Protective or Symetra Cheaper?

Rates are current as of November 6, 2026, and rates change often. The figures below are for $500,000 of 20-year level term, non-tobacco, Nevada, for the ages, sexes, and health classes shown in each row. Actual rates depend on full underwriting and are subject to change.

Male, 55, Preferred Plus, $500K 20-yr $111.09/mo $112.16/mo Protective $1.07 lower

Rates sourced from Compulife® on November 6, 2026 (NV, non-tobacco). A.M. Best financial strength ratings as shown by Compulife on that date: Protective A+, Symetra A. Rates shown are sample illustrations; actual premiums depend on full underwriting, your medical and lifestyle history, and carrier guidelines at the time of application. Not an offer of insurance.

Key takeaway: Protective was lower in all five profiles, but we treat prices within about $0.50 a month as tied, which covers four of the five. Over a 20-year term (240 months), the gap adds up to roughly $7 to $19 for those four profiles and about $257 for the 55-year-old male, a difference of about 1%. Other carriers we checked, including Banner Life, Pacific Life, and Transamerica, also came in within about a dollar on these profiles, so a quote alone does not separate them.

Which products are these quotes for? The Protective figures are for Classic Choice Term. The Symetra figures are for SwiftTerm, Symetra’s online term product. Compulife returns one price per carrier and does not label the product, so confirm the exact product when you request a quote.

Protective Life: Overview

Protective Life Insurance Company is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. Its Classic Choice Term is offered in 10-, 15-, 20-, 25-, 30-, 35-, and 40-year level terms, and coverage can be renewed to age 95. The minimum face amount is $100,000, and issue ages for the 20-year term run from 18 to 70 for non-tobacco applicants (18 to 62 for tobacco). The 30-year term runs from 18 to 58 for non-tobacco applicants. Policies are subject to underwriting. We have not verified a specific accelerated underwriting path or turnaround time for Protective, so ask us what is currently available.

Conversion

Protective’s guide lists several conversion paths. In policy years 1 to 5, the term can convert to Protective Lifetime Assurance UL or Strategic Objectives II VUL. In all eligible years, it can convert to ProClassic Legacy UL, Dynamic Plus UL, ProClassic II UL, or non-participating whole life. The Legacy UL conversion window is up to 8 years on a 10-year term, 13 years on a 15-year term, and 18 years on 20- to 40-year terms, ending at the policy anniversary nearest the insured’s 70th birthday. Product availability can change by the time you convert, and the guide does not say whether base conversions require evidence of insurability, so confirm that before relying on it.

Optional Riders

  • Conversion Choice with ExtendCare (elected at issue): available at issue for ages 20 to 60 and face amounts of $100,000 to $5,000,000. Protective’s guide describes it as allowing conversion without evidence of insurability, over the level period minus two years (up to 18 years, or the anniversary nearest age 70). Not available for tobacco classes.
  • Waiver of Premium: available at issue for ages 18 to 55, with a six-month waiting period if the insured is totally disabled. It expires at age 65 and carries an extra cost.
  • Accidental Death Benefit: available at issue for ages 18 to 60, from $1,000 to $250,000. It expires at age 65.
  • Children’s Term Life rider: covers children from 15 days to 18 years old, with underwriting required for each child. Coverage expires when the base insured reaches 75, and children can convert at age 25 for up to five times the rider amount.
  • Income Provider endorsement: lets the death benefit be paid as guaranteed monthly or annual income for up to 30 years, at no additional cost, if elected at issue.

Symetra Life Insurance: Overview

Symetra Life Insurance Company is owned by Japan’s Sumitomo Life. Its SwiftTerm product is available in 10-, 15-, 20-, and 30-year level terms, with face amounts from $100,000 to $5 million. Per Symetra’s SwiftTerm fact sheet (document WEB-1596, 3/25), issue ages run from 20 to 60 for the 10-, 15-, and 20-year terms, and from 20 to 55 for the 30-year term (non-nicotine; 50 for nicotine users). After the level term, the policy renews with annually increasing premiums until age 95. SwiftTerm is not available in all states. Symetra also sells Symetra Term Life, a fully underwritten product with different features.

Three Underwriting Paths

Symetra says your application answers determine one of three paths: instant coverage (about 18 minutes for qualifying applicants), accelerated underwriting (24 to 72 hours), or full underwriting (about 30 days, which may include an exam). Not everyone qualifies for the faster paths, and the path you land on depends on your answers and health history.

Conversion and the Conversion Enhancement Rider

The base conversion privilege is included: you can request conversion to a permanent Symetra policy (currently universal life) before the end of the 10th policy anniversary or the policy anniversary after your 70th birthday, whichever is earlier. Partial conversions are allowed, but the remaining term coverage ends. Symetra’s optional Conversion Enhancement Rider (CER) allows conversion to additional Symetra permanent products and may extend the conversion period, but it cannot be combined with the Waiver of Premium Rider. Confirm the exact deadline for your term before relying on the extension.

Other Symetra Features

  • Bereavement services: a Value Added Benefit gives beneficiaries access to grief and estate-settlement support through Empathy, a third party. These services are not insurance.
  • Accidental Death Benefit rider (optional): up to $250,000.
  • Children’s Term Life rider (optional): $1,000 to $10,000 per child.
  • Waiver of Premium rider (optional): extra cost; cannot be combined with the Conversion Enhancement Rider.

Placement Patterns We See

  • A buyer comparing the lowest quotes. When Protective and Symetra land within pennies, as they did here for four of five profiles, price rarely decides it. The tie-breakers are the conversion plan, the term lengths and ages available, and how each carrier’s underwriting treats the applicant’s health history.
  • A buyer who needs coverage in place quickly and is comfortable applying online. SwiftTerm’s instant and accelerated paths are built for this, for applicants who qualify. Applicants who do not qualify move to full underwriting, which Symetra says can take about 30 days.
  • A buyer in their 40s with a 20- or 30-year term who may want permanent coverage later. Protective’s window runs up to 18 years on a 20-year term, while SwiftTerm’s base window ends at the 10th anniversary unless you add the Conversion Enhancement Rider. That gap can matter more than a few cents a month.
  • A buyer over 60, or one who wants a 25-, 35-, or 40-year term. SwiftTerm’s maximum issue age is 60 on the 10-, 15-, and 20-year terms, and it is not offered in 25-, 35-, or 40-year terms, so Protective is the one of the two to price. Issue ages are lower on Protective’s longest terms, so confirm eligibility.

These are illustrative, anonymized patterns, not descriptions of specific clients or guarantees of outcome. Individual outcomes vary.

The Verdict

Choose Protective if:

  • You want a long Legacy UL conversion window (up to 18 years on a 20- to 40-year term)
  • You are over 60, or you need a 25-, 35-, or 40-year term
  • You want the slightly lower quote shown above

Choose Symetra if:

  • You want the option of an instant or accelerated online application through SwiftTerm, if you qualify
  • You are buying a 10-year term, where SwiftTerm’s base conversion window (10 years) is longer than Protective’s Legacy UL window (up to 8 years). Other Protective conversion products may have different windows, so confirm.
  • You want Symetra’s bereavement services included at no extra charge for your beneficiaries

Neither choice is right for everyone. The decision depends on your age, the term length you need, how quickly you want coverage in place, and how likely you are to convert. Frequently Asked Questions

Is Protective or Symetra cheaper for term life insurance?

Protective was lower in all five profiles in our November 6, 2026 Compulife check for $500,000 of 20-year term, but within $0.03 to $0.08 a month for four of them. The largest gap was $1.07 a month ($111.09 vs. $112.16) for a 55-year-old male in Preferred Plus. Rates change and depend on underwriting, so quote your own profile.

Which Symetra term product do these rates reflect?

The Symetra rates in this article are for SwiftTerm, Symetra’s online term product. Compulife returns one price per carrier and does not label the product, so confirm the exact product when you request a quote.

How do Protective and Symetra differ on conversion?

Protective’s Classic Choice Term guide lists a Legacy UL conversion window of up to 8, 13, or 18 years depending on term length, ending at the anniversary nearest age 70, plus other products in the early policy years. Symetra’s SwiftTerm base conversion must be requested before the end of the 10th policy anniversary or the anniversary after age 70, whichever is earlier; its optional Conversion Enhancement Rider can add products and may extend the period. Confirm the rule for your policy in the contract.

How fast can I get coverage with Symetra SwiftTerm?

Symetra describes three paths: instant coverage in about 18 minutes, accelerated underwriting in 24 to 72 hours, and full underwriting in about 30 days. Your application answers determine the path, and not everyone qualifies for the faster ones. Timing at Protective depends on the underwriting path, so ask us what is currently available.

What term lengths and ages do Protective and Symetra offer?

Protective’s Classic Choice Term is offered in 10-, 15-, 20-, 25-, 30-, 35-, and 40-year terms, with issue ages of 18 to 70 on the 20-year term for non-tobacco applicants. Symetra’s SwiftTerm is offered in 10-, 15-, 20-, and 30-year terms, with issue ages of 20 to 60 on the 10-, 15-, and 20-year terms. Issue ages are lower on the longest terms, so confirm eligibility for your age.

Can I add Waiver of Premium to either policy?

Yes, as an optional rider with extra cost on both. Protective’s must be elected at issue for ages 18 to 55, has a six-month waiting period, and expires at age 65. Symetra’s SwiftTerm version cannot be combined with the Conversion Enhancement Rider. Confirm the terms and any rating limits for your age and health class.
