A cancer diagnosis in your past does not necessarily prevent you from obtaining life insurance. However, the type of cancer, stage at diagnosis, treatment received, and time since remission are all critical factors in how underwriters assess your application. Understanding how rate classes work will help you set realistic expectations before you apply.

What Insurance Companies Look At

  • Type of cancer: some cancers (e.g., basal cell skin cancer, early-stage thyroid cancer) carry minimal underwriting impact; others (e.g., pancreatic, lung, brain) are much more difficult to insure
  • Stage and grade at diagnosis: Stage I with low-grade pathology is viewed very differently from Stage III high-grade
  • Treatment received: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, or a combination
  • Date of last treatment and remission date: time since treatment completion is one of the most important factors
  • Current status: in remission, active treatment, or watchful waiting
  • Recurrence history: any recurrence after remission significantly increases underwriting risk
  • Follow-up care and surveillance: regular oncology follow-ups and clean scans improve the picture
  • Tumor markers and most recent lab results

How Carriers Typically Respond

Many cancers are insurable after a waiting period following remission — commonly 2 to 10 years depending on the cancer type and stage. Some early-stage cancers with excellent prognosis (such as localized prostate cancer or in-situ cervical cancer) may be insurable much sooner. During active treatment, most carriers will postpone applications until treatment is complete and remission is confirmed.

Cancers With More Favorable Underwriting

  • Basal cell and early squamous cell skin cancer
  • In-situ cervical cancer (CIN)
  • Early-stage thyroid cancer after thyroidectomy
  • Early-stage prostate cancer (Gleason 6 or lower)
  • Early-stage breast cancer after 2–5 years in remission
