High-Deductible Medigap Plan G is a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan that provides the same comprehensive benefits as standard Medigap Plan G — but at a significantly lower monthly premium in exchange for a higher annual deductible that you must meet before the plan begins paying benefits.
How High-Deductible Plan G Works
With High-Deductible Plan G, you are responsible for paying Medicare-covered out-of-pocket costs yourself until you reach the annual deductible amount set by Medicare each year. In 2026, that deductible is $2,950. Once you meet the deductible, the plan covers the same benefits as standard Plan G for the remainder of the calendar year.
What High-Deductible Plan G Covers
Once the annual deductible is satisfied, High-Deductible Plan G covers:
- Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted)
- Part B coinsurance or copayment (the 20% you owe after Original Medicare pays)
- Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
- Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
- Part A inpatient hospital deductible
- Foreign travel emergency coverage (up to plan limits)
Note: Like standard Plan G, High-Deductible Plan G does not cover the Medicare Part B annual deductible. This amount ($283 in 2026) counts toward your High-Deductible Plan G deductible.
Who Is High-Deductible Plan G Best For?
High-Deductible Plan G tends to work best for people who:
- Are generally healthy and do not anticipate frequent medical expenses
- Want to keep their monthly premium costs low
- Are comfortable managing some out-of-pocket costs up to the deductible amount in exchange for lower premiums
- Want catastrophic protection — knowing that once the deductible is met, virtually all Medicare-approved costs are covered
High-Deductible Plan G vs. Standard Plan G
The core difference between the two plans is the trade-off between monthly premium and out-of-pocket exposure:
- Standard Plan G — Higher monthly premium, lower out-of-pocket costs. Coverage begins after only the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026).
- High-Deductible Plan G — Lower monthly premium, higher potential out-of-pocket costs up to $2,950 in 2026 before full coverage kicks in.
In many cases, the premium savings with High-Deductible Plan G can be substantial, particularly for younger Medicare enrollees at age 65 who are in good health. Whether the lower premium outweighs the higher deductible risk depends on your individual health history and financial situation.
Availability and Eligibility
High-Deductible Plan G is available to Medicare beneficiaries who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. It is not available in all states, so availability may vary. As with all Medigap plans, the best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period — the 6-month window beginning when you are both age 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B — when you have guaranteed issue rights and cannot be denied coverage or charged more based on your health.
