Medigap Plan G offers the most comprehensive coverage to supplement your Original Medicare coverage and, with very competitive rates, has become the most popular plan for new Medicare enrollees.
Note: Medigap Plan F is no longer available to new Medicare enrollees who became eligible on or after January 1, 2020. If you became eligible for Medicare before that date, Plan F may still be available to you. For most people enrolling today, Plan G is the top-tier option.
As the cost for health care continues to increase, people are being exposed to higher and higher premiums once their initial premium rate locks expire. In an effort to reduce their premiums, many people have begun looking at Plan N as a great alternative to Plan G — and it’s a great option for people who want to save some money on their monthly premiums.
Plan N offers nearly all of the same benefits as Plan G, with a couple of key differences:
- Plan N does not cover the Medicare Part B deductible ($283 in 2026) — neither does Plan G, so both plans are equal on this point
- Plan N does not cover Medicare Part B excess charges (an amount up to 15% above what Medicare approves — only applicable if a doctor doesn’t accept Medicare assignment)
- Under Plan N, you pay a copay for doctor office visits (up to $20) and emergency room visits (up to $50, waived if admitted)
If your doctor accepts Medicare and assignment, they are accepting the Medicare-approved amount for the service as payment in full — so excess charges won’t apply to you, making Plan N an even more attractive option.
The difference in premiums between Plan G and Plan N can be meaningful, and the small copays under Plan N are often a very worthwhile trade-off. Plan N is a great choice for those on a fixed income who want to keep their premiums down while still maximizing their benefits and limiting out-of-pocket costs.
