Guaranteed issue life insurance accepts every applicant within the eligible age range — no health questions, no medical exam, no possibility of being declined based on your health history.

Who It’s For

Guaranteed issue policies exist for people who cannot qualify for traditionally underwritten coverage or even simplified issue final expense policies due to serious health conditions. If you’ve been declined elsewhere, this is typically the option of last resort that still provides meaningful coverage.

Common Qualifying Situations

  • Active cancer treatment or recent cancer diagnosis
  • Congestive heart failure (CHF)
  • Recent heart attack or stroke (within 2 years)
  • Organ transplant history
  • HIV/AIDS diagnosis
  • Dialysis or end-stage renal disease
  • Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis
  • Confined to a nursing home or requiring daily assistance

Key Features and Trade-offs

No Health Questions — Acceptance is guaranteed for applicants within the age window (typically 50–80 or 45–85 depending on the carrier).
2-Year Graded Death Benefit — All guaranteed issue policies include a waiting period. If death occurs in the first 2 years for non-accidental causes, beneficiaries receive a return of premiums paid plus interest (typically 10%), not the full death benefit. After 2 years, the full benefit is paid for any cause of death.
Higher Premiums — Because the insurer accepts everyone, premiums are higher per dollar of coverage than traditionally underwritten or simplified issue policies. This is the cost of guaranteed acceptance.
Smaller Coverage Amounts — Most guaranteed issue policies max out at $25,000. Some carriers go to $40,000. These policies are designed to cover final expenses, not income replacement.
Permanent Coverage — Whole life, so coverage never expires and premiums never increase.

Is Guaranteed Issue Right for You?

If your health allows you to answer health questions on a simplified issue final expense policy, you’ll almost always get better rates that way. Guaranteed issue should be considered when you’ve been declined or when your health conditions make simplified issue unavailable. We’ll help you determine which path makes sense before any application is submitted.
