Accelerated underwriting is a modern approach to life insurance that allows many healthy applicants to get approved for coverage — sometimes in minutes — without a blood draw, urine sample, or paramedical exam. Instead of ordering a physical exam, the insurance company assesses your risk using a combination of your application answers, a telephone or electronic health interview, and real-time database checks including your prescription drug history, Medical Information Bureau (MIB) records, motor vehicle report, and in some cases, your credit-based insurance score or digital health data.

If the data confirms you’re a low risk, the underwriting engine issues an approval — no exam required. If the data is incomplete or raises a flag, your application either gets referred to a human underwriter for review or falls into traditional underwriting, which may then require an exam. The key advantage: for healthy applicants, the process that used to take 3–6 weeks can now be completed in 24–72 hours, or instantly for those who qualify for immediate-decision approval.

How Accelerated Underwriting Differs from Simplified Issue

These two terms are often confused. Simplified issue uses a short health questionnaire (typically 5–15 yes/no questions) and skips the exam entirely — but it does not use the same depth of database analysis as accelerated underwriting. Coverage limits under simplified issue are generally lower (often $250,000–$500,000) and premiums are somewhat higher because the insurer has less visibility into your health profile.

Accelerated underwriting, by contrast, is designed to deliver the same actuarial accuracy as full underwriting — just faster. Qualified applicants are eligible for the same preferred and preferred-plus risk classes available through traditional underwriting, which means competitive pricing, not a simplified-issue surcharge. If an applicant doesn’t clear the accelerated path, most carriers automatically route the application to traditional underwriting rather than declining it outright.

Who Qualifies?

Most carriers’ accelerated underwriting programs are designed for applicants who are generally healthy — no significant chronic conditions, no recent major diagnoses, clean prescription history, healthy BMI, and a clean driving record. Age windows vary by carrier but the most common range is ages 18–60, with some carriers extending eligibility to age 65. Coverage amounts eligible for no-exam consideration range from $500,000 to $5 million depending on the carrier and the applicant’s age.

If you have a complex health history — diabetes, cardiac issues, cancer history, high BMI — accelerated underwriting will likely refer your case to full underwriting. That’s not necessarily bad; it just means the exam path, which can still result in an approval at a competitive rate class.

Carriers We Work With and Their Accelerated Underwriting Programs

Below is a summary of the accelerated underwriting and no-exam programs offered by the carriers we represent. Coverage guidelines and age limits are subject to change; actual eligibility is determined at the time of application. All dollar amounts refer to face amount (death benefit).

Carriers marked with ⚡ offer instant-decision underwriting, meaning some applications receive an immediate approval (often within minutes to hours) rather than a 24–72 hour review window.

⚡ Symetra — SwiftTerm / Swift Underwriting

Symetra is one of the most competitive accelerated underwriting platforms in the market and one of our top recommendations for healthy applicants wanting fast coverage. Their SwiftTerm product offers instant-decision capability — some applicants are approved in as little as 18 minutes. • Coverage: Ages 20–60, up to $5,000,000 (applications over $2 million are reviewed by an underwriter but are not automatically declined)
  • Rate classes: Standard Plus or better, including Preferred Tobacco

The Bottom Line

Accelerated underwriting has changed what’s possible in life insurance. A healthy applicant in their 30s or 40s can now get a $1 million or $2 million policy approved and delivered in 24–72 hours — or sometimes faster — without ever scheduling a nurse visit. For most of our clients in good health, we start with carriers that have the strongest accelerated programs for their age and face amount and work from there.

If you’re not sure whether you’d qualify, the best approach is to run your information through a carrier. Applications that don’t clear the accelerated path are automatically referred to traditional underwriting — you don’t lose anything by trying, and you never have to complete an exam you didn’t need.

Call us at 1-888-972-0024 or send us an e-mail to discuss which carriers are the best fit for your age, coverage need, and health profile. We represent all of the carriers listed above and can guide you to the program most likely to give you the fastest, best-priced outcome.
