ACA-compliant health plans are organized into four metal tiers — Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum — based on how costs are split between you and the insurer. All four tiers cover the same 10 essential health benefits; they differ only in how expenses are shared.
How Metal Tiers Work
The “actuarial value” of a plan tells you roughly what percentage of covered medical costs the insurer pays for an average enrollee. The remaining percentage is your share through deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
Bronze — Insurer Pays ~60%, You Pay ~40%
Bronze plans carry the lowest monthly premiums but the highest out-of-pocket costs when you use care. Deductibles are typically $6,000–$9,000 per person. Best suited for healthy individuals who want protection against catastrophic events and rarely use routine medical services. Many Bronze plans are HSA-compatible HDHPs.
Silver — Insurer Pays ~70%, You Pay ~30%
Silver plans offer mid-range premiums and mid-range out-of-pocket costs. Crucially, Silver is the only tier eligible for Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs) — if your income is 100–250% of the Federal Poverty Level, a Silver plan with CSR can perform like Gold or even Platinum at Silver prices. For many subsidy-eligible buyers, Silver is the clear best value.
Gold — Insurer Pays ~80%, You Pay ~20%
Gold plans have higher monthly premiums but lower deductibles (typically $500–$2,000) and lower out-of-pocket costs overall. Best for people who make frequent doctor visits, take regular prescriptions, or anticipate planned procedures. The higher premium often pays for itself through lower cost-sharing.
Platinum — Insurer Pays ~90%, You Pay ~10%
Platinum plans carry the highest monthly premiums but the lowest possible out-of-pocket costs — often with $0 deductibles and minimal copays. Best for people with significant, predictable medical needs who want maximum financial protection throughout the year.
Which Tier Is Right for You?
The right choice depends on your expected healthcare usage, your income (and subsidy eligibility), and your financial tolerance for out-of-pocket costs. A healthy 30-year-old who never sees a doctor has very different needs from someone managing a chronic condition.
